For younger dancers we have Foundation in Dance which draws on Jazz and other disciplines to introduce children to the world of dance. Ideal for beginners or those who need their confidence building up.
Foundation in Dance takes students through the foundations needed to be a stand out dancer. Teaching the correct technique and performance skills for many dance styles including, Jazz, Lyrical, Contemporary, Commercial, Jazz Musical Theatre, and Neoclassical Ballet. Taught by Evelyn Smith, a past Talent Shack student, she was there at the beginning. And now, after completing her training and gaining a contract with Disney she returns to teach our younger students before going back to Disney in January.
For older, more experienced dancers we have Senior Jazz, a technique class to develop strength and skill in a welcoming atmosphere. Taught by Hannah. An friendly established group, new dancers always welcome. The focus is on individual growth and working together with occasional performance opportunities. The focus is on development, not delivery.
What is Jazz?
Jazz dance combines elements of classical ballet with strong dynamic shifts in shape and form. Jazz dance, as with the music, derived from African American culture. Syncopated rhythms with smooth flowing phrases. Isolations and extensions, leaps and turns. Jazz dance has been used in many iconic musicals since the 1930’s and can be seen influencing the commercial choreography of todays pop, hip hop and rock scene. Jazz dance is everything you love from classical movement with the expressive freedoms of carnival and speakeasy culture.
As a versatile form of expression, it allows dancers to showcase their individual style and creativity while developing their technical skills.
